Protection from Genetic Discrimination
Finally! The House of Representatives voted to pass the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which will hopefully serve to protect Americans from instances such as insurance companies charging higher rates, or employers not hiring based on the results of genetic tests. This is really wonderful news because if it becomes law, individuals will be able to access genetic tests without the fear of discrimination. Even though it is expected that the Senate will endorse the Act and President Bush has said he’ll sign off on it, I would still suggest to anyone considering genetic testing to get it done anonymously.
Sharon, this is excellent advice.

I can’t believe that our President would sign off on this. Doesn’t seem like it’s good for big business. Well I’m not complaining.

Fantastic post Dr Sharon – gread advice.
Hmmmm – did not even know it was possible to do anonymous testing! I will need to have some testing done in the fall and will be sure to ask my doctor to do that anonymously!

Dear Kolla, it might be even better to get genetic testing done anonymously through a private company. That way you can choose whether or not you would like to have the results included in your medical records.

This extreemly important…. has anyone seen the movie “Gatica” ? – it’s sci-fi but really good and with big name actors – see that and you will understand how crazy genetic screening can get!
